About The Artist
I create my collage artwork with a theme of exploring Bahamian life through a vibrant contemporary lens. My aim is to highlight notable and mundane moments of island life as a means of fully encapsulating the Bahamian experience, diverted from the sensationalized tourist-geared perspective of The Bahamas. This is done through creating an experience of remembrance and nostalgia by way of vibrant ecological scenes that aim to trigger recollection in Bahamian, Caribbean, or any islander. The hope is to emote reminiscence of childhood or familiarity through flora and fauna, culture, and tropical imagery. Though, for the viewer at large, the aim is to bring a sense of peace and be transported to the environment regardless of whether they grew up in the tropics.
Furthermore, the centrality in all my work is highlighting Blackness in all stages of life and emotional range; calling attention to Black beauty through the use of whimsical scenes, nature, gold accents, and vibrant colors and patterns contrasting black and white found photos. Finally, the intersectionality of Blackness and nature are fundamental to my work. The centuries of meaningful healing connection the Black diaspora have to the Earth inspires all of my work, interlacing Blackness with nature as a symbol of growth and spiritual connection.
